FIQAS and Port of Rotterdam Authority
The port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest sea port, called on yearly by close to 130,000 sea-going and inland vessels. The Port of Rotterdam Authority enhances the port’s competitive position as a logistics hub and world-class industrial complex. FIQAS provides the software to translate ship calls to the Rotterdam port area into visit report forms real-time and then, after approval by the clients and after validation by the Port Authority, to invoice them fully automatically.
The port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest sea port. The port owes its leading position to its outstanding accessibility for sea-going vessels, its intermodal connections and the 185,000 people working in and for Rotterdam’s port and industrial area. Every year, the port is visited by 30,000 seagoing and 120,000 inland vessels, which provide for a throughput of hundreds of millions of tons of cargo. The port of Rotterdam is one of the drivers of the Dutch economy and the Port of Rotterdam Authority plays a crucial role in this. The core tasks of the Port Authority are the sustainable development, management and exploitation of the port as well as providing speedy and safe services for shipping. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has a yearly turnover of approximately € 710 million and employs approximately 1,200 people.
One of the most important sources of income is the port dues, the fees to be paid for ship calls to the port of Rotterdam. The port dues process includes all due costs related to a ship visit; port fees, quay, buoy and dolphin dues, disposal of waste materials and inland harbor dues. The port dues process is a complex business process of crucial importance for the Port Authority’s cash flow and therefore places high demands on the reliability, efficiency and scalability of the underlying software. The Port Authority strives for an efficient and reliable process that puts the customer first.
Since Q1 2019, the Port Authority uses the PortAbillity® software from FIQAS to calculate and invoice the port dues for seagoing vessels. This solution consists of a web-based visit report portal as front-end, which communicates on the basis of services with the invoice engine and other modules of the off-the-shelf billing platform Abillity®. PortAbillity® is seamlessly integrated into the system landscape of the Port Authority and plays a central role in the port dues process. The solution supports the process of data collection and completion, validation and calculation up to and including invoicing, presentation and reporting.
The PortAbillity® port dues solution for the Port Authority is the result of an ambitious, Agile-based project. The main drivers behind it were the transition to customer-friendly, real-time invoicing and the need to quickly respond to market developments in the future. The port dues project for the Port of Rotterdam Authority illustrates how the generic software from FIQAS can be applied in a sector-specific context, the logistics in this case. The relevance of FIQAS as a billing expert for almost every vertical is thus again demonstrated.
